Tour the Propagation Greenhouse at the FDR Estate

Thursday, April 30th, 2026
to (Eastern Time)
FDR Estate

Public Welcome Registration Required Group Tour Public Restroom Lots of Physical Activity

The greenhouse at the home of Franklin D. Roosevelt was historically used for cut flower production of roses, a Victorian fern collection, table grapes, overwintering palms and other non-hardy conservatory plants, and some annual plant propagation.  Currently, they are mainly used for the propagation of annual plants throughout the park properties and gardens.  NPS horticulturist, Anna de Cordova, will share the strategies used today including a simple germination bench, cold frames and lathe house.  Water, fertility, energy use, greenhouse plastics, commercial growing media, plant health and timing are all factors we balance in getting healthy transplants out into the park. Come check it out!

Please note: much of what we will learn applies to all plants, including native plants.

The greenhouse tour will take about 1 hour, after which we are free to explore the estate, including the Wild Garden at Bellefield, composed primarily of native plants.

Registration coming in early April.
