Hosted by Wild Ones NationalOnline/Virtual

In this special collaboration, Robin Wall Kimmerer, author, botanist, and founder of Plant Baby Plant, joins youth leader and Nurture Natives founder Esther Bonney for an intergenerational conversation about belonging, reciprocity, and native plant action.
Together, they will explore questions such as:
How do we create opportunities for young people to have a voice and feel empowered, even when they are not homeowners or decision makers? What kinds of relationships and mentorships help people stay engaged in native plant work over decades? Why do stories, shared practices, and community invitations matter just as much as plant lists?
Robin and Esther will reflect on what invites people into this work, what keeps them here, and what elders and youth have to teach each other.

Garden Enthusiasts Meetup: From Lawn to Habitat - No Registration Required
What if our yards could be more than just lawn?
Join us for the next Garden Enthusiasts Meetup as local gardener and Wild Ones Board Member Alexandra Lotero Vanderkam shares a welcoming, photo-rich talk on transforming a conventional yard into a thriving native habitat. Over the past few years, she transformed her property from turf grass into a layered landscape featuring a woodland garden, hedgerow, pond, and seeded meadow—now alive with birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
In the spirit of this casual, community meetup, this session is less about “perfect gardens” and more about the real process: experimenting, learning, and adapting over time. Alexandra will share what worked, what didn’t, and how she approached challenges like deer pressure, site conditions, and phased planting.
Whether you’re just starting out, curious about native plants, or already deep into gardening, you’re invited to come, get inspired, and join the conversation. There will be plenty of time for Q&A, idea-sharing, and discussion.
No registration is required!
Where: Boardman Road Branch Library, 141 Boardman Road, Poughkeepsie, NY, 12603
When: Tuesday, May 12 (second Tuesday of the month)

Join us for a visit to Stonecrop Gardens. Known for its dramatic landscape of windswept fields and rocky slopes, Stonecrop is located in Cold Spring, NY. The woodland, cliff rock garden, and water gardens can provide inspiration to those who are interested in creating naturalistic garden designs using native. We will receive an orientation to the garden and then as a group explore the woodlands together collecting ideas that can be applied to shade gardens using native species. After that you’ll be free to explore on your own the cliff rock gardens, alpine gardens, etc. on a self guided tour.

Garden Enthusiasts Open Garden Tour
Wallkill, NY - Private Residence
Public Welcome Registration Required Free Event Home/Private Garden Tour Free Public Parking
From Lawn to Habitat
Please join us for a self-directed garden tour at a private residence. Alexandra Lotero Vanderkam, Wild Ones Mid-Hudson Valley Membership Chair, is hosting a tour of her home landscape. You can see how she changed her conventional landscape into a naturalized garden supporting wildlife and native plants.
Alex describes the process: “When we moved to our 5-acre property in 2020, nearly two acres around the house were lawn. Over the past several years, I have gradually transformed about half an acre into a series of connected habitats using primarily native plants.
Visitors will find a sunny meadow that I established from seed, a woodland garden beneath mature trees, a mixed hedgerow of native shrubs and understory trees, and a natural wildlife pond that supports frogs, toads, dragonflies, and other beneficial creatures. I have planted more than 800 perennials and 140 trees and shrubs to create blooms from spring through fall and provide food and shelter for pollinators and birds. I planted most of the perennials as small landscape plugs, and many of the shrubs and trees as inexpensive bare-root seedlings.
This garden reflects my belief that landscapes can be both beautiful and ecologically vibrant. Come get inspired and enjoy hummingbirds, butterflies, bees, and seasonal flowers. Through this ongoing project, I demonstrate practical ways to replace lawn with habitat while creating a garden that welcomes both wildlife and people.”
Registration required and will be available in early July. This is a private residence and address will be sent to all who register.
